ANCHOR CHAIN AND ACCESSORIES

Marine Anchor Chain

Marine anchor chain is a steel chain connecting the hull and the anchor, and is an important part of the ship’s offshore mooring system. When a ship is at sea, it is moored by dropping anchors. The anchor chains connects the hull and the anchor, and plays the role of transmitting the anchor’s gripping force during the mooring process. Due to the changeable external force conditions of wind, waves and currents at sea and the possibility of encountering extreme sea conditions, in order to ensure the smooth realization of the reliable bottom grip of the anchor, requirements are put forward for the strength and length of the anchor chain.

In Terms Of Strength:

According to the chain link structure, there are stud link chains and studless link chains. Under the same size and material, stud link chains have greater strength. At the same time, according to the steel grade used in production, three different grade are distinguished: M1/M2/M3. In severe sea conditions, marine anchor chains are mostly AM3 (strength level of stud chains M3, A represents stud link chains).

In Terms Of Length:

The basic condition for the anchor to effectively grip the bottom is to be able to hook objects on the seabed, so if the chain is not long enough, the anchor will not work. A complete anchor chain is first connected by many chain links to form a certain length of chain links, and then several chain links are connected by connecting links or shackles to form the entire anchor chain. Therefore, in deeper waters, the number of chain links can be increased to achieve the purpose of increasing the chain and effectively grasping the bottom. Usually, the length of a standard anchor chain link is 27.5m (1 Lenght=15 Fathoms=90 Feet=27.5 Meters), and the length of the chain equipped for each side of the main anchor of a 10,000-ton ship is usually about 12 links.

Certifications

Chains used in marine applications must often meet stringent safety and performance standards, which are certified by various classification societies. These certifications ensure the quality, reliability, and suitability of the chains for use in maritime environments. These certifications, from societies like ABS, LR, BV, DNV, KR, NK, CCS, RINA, RMRS, IRS, CR.

Main Application Of Anchor Chain

The anchor chain is a critical component in maritime operations, used to secure vessels and structures to the seabed. Its main applications include:

Ship Anchoring Systems

  • Primary Function: Primarily used to secure ships of all sizes to the seabed by connecting the vessel to the anchor. The chain provides the weight and strength necessary to hold the ship in place, especially during anchoring in harbors, offshore areas, or rough seas.

Offshore Oil and Gas Platforms

  • Application: Used to moor offshore platforms, oil rigs, and other fixed structures to the ocean floor. These chains must withstand the significant forces generated by waves, currents, and wind while maintaining the position of the platform.

Mooring Systems

  • Use in Floating Structures: Essential for mooring floating structures such as buoys, barges, floating docks, and offshore wind turbines. They ensure the stability of these structures by keeping them securely anchored to the seabed.

Towing and Salvage Operations

  • Heavy Load Bearing: In marine towing and salvage operations, anchor chains are used to secure and tow large vessels or salvage submerged objects. Their strength and durability make them suitable for these demanding tasks.

Anchor chains play a vital role in securing ships, platforms, floating structures, and marine equipment to the seafloor, ensuring stability and safety in diverse maritime environments. Their strength, durability, and resistance to environmental forces make them indispensable in both commercial and military marine operations.
